William W. Akins' Obituary
William Wiley Akins, 87, of Broken Arrow, Ok passed surrounded by family on December 18, 2016 from Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born on January 21, 1929 in Point, Texas to Washington Montgomery and Zera Mae Akins. Bill was an only child and attended Frederick High School where he met his wife of 69 years, Barbara Jean. Bill graduated in 1947 and was an excellent football player earning a full scholarship to the University of Oklahoma; however, he chose to stay near Barbara and they married on December 24, 1947. His only son, Ronald Eugene Akins, was born on September 8, 1949. Bill joined the Army in 1948 as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne serving in Ft. Benning, Georgia as well as Charlottesville, North Carolina. Cpl. William W. Akins was Honorably Discharged in 1950. He then began a career with Sears, where he would later retire with over 40 years of service. Bill wasn’t finished, he went on to become a Shriner for the Merrymakers. He participated as a clown for many children events and circuses over the years. Bill was also an avid golfer and member of Indian Springs Country Club along with his wife for over 20 years. Bill was gentle yet fierce, led by example and loved unconditionally. He put others first and never met a stranger. He enjoyed meeting with the coffee group at the club which later moved to McDonalds. He also looked forward to Saturday morning meetings at the church. He was loved by everyone that knew him and always argued with Barbara as to who loved whom more. And of course, to us grandkids he made the best chocolate milkshake ever! Bill is survived by his wife Barbara Jean of Broken Arrow; 1 Son, Ron Akins and wife Debi of Kellyville; 5 grandchildren, Kari Huber and husband Mike of Hazard, Ky, Shane Akins and wife Cinnamon of Rogers, Ar, Josh Akins and his wife Shanda of Jenks, Adam Akins and his wife Bree of Bixby & Beki Akins of Tulsa; 10 great grandchildren, Sarrah and Kaleb Huber, Rylie and Hayden Akins with Emili Kerley, and Carter, Campbell and Canton Akins, and Kinlee and Harper Akins as well as one great great grandson, Hudson Akins. Memorial services with Joe Deitz officiating will be held at 11:00 AM at Indian Springs Baptist Church on Friday December 30, 2016 with interment at Floral Haven Veteran’s Memorial. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital. .
