Smith, Alan Ray's Obituary
On October 4th, 2025, at his home in Broken Arrow, OK, Alan Ray Smith received the full measure of the joy of the Lord. Alan was born March 4th, 1951, at St. John’s hospital in Tulsa, OK. A true Tulsa “Westsider”, he was raised in Carbondale, baptized at Phoenix Avenue Baptist Church (at age 8), and graduated from Webster High School in 1969. In February 1971 Alan left political science studies at the University of Tulsa to proudly serve in the United States Army. While on leave after basic training, Alan married the love of his life Jamie Lynne Hunter on June 26, 1971, and the couple spent their first married year in Germany where he completed his duties. Honorably discharged in November 1972, the couple returned to Tahlequah, OK where they started a family and graduated from Northeastern State University. His professional career would lead the family throughout Oklahoma, primarily Woodward, Grady, Cleveland, and Tulsa counties.
A lifelong hard worker and wonderful provider, his working days began in his youth and included roles as a paperboy, busboy (Camelot Hotel), custodian, carpenter, retail manager, teacher, business owner (printing press), state tourism coordinator, newspaper editor (Woodward News), government bid manager, sales manager, corporate trainer, project manager, and more. Alan was an early adopter of personal computers and enjoyed computer science as a hobby, along with hunting & fishing, vegetable gardening, carpentry, coaching youth baseball, photography, OU sports, and travel. He was also a “car guy”, mostly out of necessity, and enjoyed passing on to his sons and grandsons the mechanical skills learned from his own father. Those who truly got to know Alan discovered a great sense of humor; a quick-witted man with a silly side and always easy to laughter.
A loving son, brother, cousin, uncle, father, and grandfather, family was second only to God, and “Peepaw” was the title held most dearly. Alan was preceded in death by his parents Alvin L. Smith and Jacquelyn Smith of Tulsa, OK, and daughter Jacquelyn Joanna Smith of Norman, OK. He is survived by his wife (of 54 years) Jamie Lynne Smith of Broken Arrow, OK, sister Cheryl Cleland and brother-in-law Bill Cleland of Glenpool, OK, son Amos Smith, daughter-in-law Elia Smith, and grandchildren Daniel Smith and Autumn Smith of San Diego, CA, daughter Glory Police, and grandchildren Matthew Police, Andrew Police, and Alicia Police of Broken Arrow, OK, son Elijah Smith of Broken Arrow, OK, granddaughter Micah Morgan, grandson-in-law Clint Morgan, and great grandchildren Roman Morgan and Elsie Morgan of Skiatook, OK, and so many beloved members of the extended Smith, Perry, Hunter, Howe, and Walker families.
His family is forever grateful to the anonymous liver and kidney donor that added almost nine years to Alan’s life. In lieu of flowers, they request donations be made to the American Society of Transplantation (https://www.myast.org/give).
