Carl, aka "Sonny", was given this nickname as long as I can remember and he is best known by this name to our brothers and sisters and close relatives. When I share that I grew up with 4 brothers and 6 sisters, I always get a startled look. But, we weren't all home at the same time. Sonny was my one of my older brothers and was 10 years older than me. I remember feeling safe knowing that I had a big brother to protect me on the Allen school bus route and when we lived in Amarillo for a short time. He soon married and left the house to start his own family. Next to Mom, I don't believe there was anyone more proud of Sonny than me when he graduated from OSU Culinary School in Okmulgee. I was proud to mention that we had a chef in the family. Mom would tease him and say that he still couldn't cook as good as she. I remember she kept an original pecan pie recipe that Sonny had developed and given her. He seemed to have sworn her to secrecy and she kept it all these years. I remember his eyes would light up as he shared his cooking events and experiences with us. He would bring photo albums to share and explain every picture. I found it funny that there weren't many photos family, just lots of food and fancy arrangements. Some of the places I remember him working in were Wagner, Lawton and then finally making his home in Tulsa. He also found it funny as he told us that had to travel all the way to Ada just to have his teeth cleaned at the CN Medical Center. He always tried to stop and visit with Mom before heading home. Sonny would give me updates about his family, especially the grandkids. I will miss our phone calls, his smile and laughter. Chipisalacho, my big brother.
