Charles Samuel Hulbert's Obituary
Charles Samuel Hulbert was born to Ralph and Sarah Hulbert on Friday, January 13th, 1928. He lived all his life on the farm and attended a one room school house through the 8th grade. He graduated from El Reno High School in 1946 where he was an All State and All Star basketball player. He received the Letterman’s award his senior year for the Outstanding Athlete of the Year. He made the winning basket to take the State Basketball Championship his senior year. The town bought the coach a new car and sent the team to Kansas City for a basketball tournament.After high school he joined the Army and became a corporal and spent 2 years in Japan. This was the time when WW II was over and it was called the Army of Occupation. He ended up playing football for the Army and has a bracelet for winning the First Calvary Division’s Football Championship in Japan 1947.He then attended El Reno Junior College and played basketball there.He and Lillian met on the school bus when they were juniors in high school. They were married August 20th, 1949 and moved to Stillwater so that Charles could attend OSU while Lillian worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Charles attended some basketball practices under Coach Henry Iba, but concluded that maybe he was too old to walk-on the team thus enjoyed the games with Lillian from the stands.After graduation he went to work for Shell Oil Company for which he spent 38 years and loved his work. He started in Elk City, OK, then Seiling, OK, then was transferred to Traverse City, MI in 1975 then to Brandon, MS in 1984, where he retired in 1989. He used to say “Shell has been good to me, but I have been good to Shell as well”.They lived in Mississippi for another 5 years as they loved their church and neighbors and began traveling with two other retired Shell couples. They made several trips overseas and mission trips to Belize and Ecuador. In Belize they helped build a missionary home and in Ecuador they drilled a water well.In 1994, they moved to Broken Arrow to be closer to their girls and families. They joined First Baptist Church, BA and have been involved in many areas of service within the church.Charles is survived by his wife Lillian (in August they celebrated 66 years of marriage), daughters Debra and Larry Dickerson of Tahlequah, Melody Simmons of Sand Springs, Tammy and Jeff Chaffin of Broken Arrow. Grandchildren Kylee and Rocky Battenfield, Courtney Dickerson, Justin and Casey Simmons, Michael and Heather Simmons, Brooklyn and Charlie Chaffin. Great grandchildren Abigail Kelly, Sydni Battenfield, Carson and Layla Simmons, Kynlee Simmons. Sister Lois and Bob Blackburn of Madera, CA and a very special niece Dianna Moody, who he was a father figure to and he always called “ his daughter #4”. Several other nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of many friends.He was proceeded in death by his parents, Ralph and Sarah Hulbert, brother Ralph and sisters Ruth Soverign and Jo Ann Hunt. Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Broken Arrow. Interment at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.Family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home visitation room.In lieu of flowers you can make a contribution to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, in honor of Charles (Charlie) Chaffin.
