Leon was many things to his Webster Warrior Classmates, but most of us remember him as one tough Westsider with one soft heart. I remember Leon from about age eight when he pitched for Oakhurst and I played infield for Carbondale. He had one wicked fastball and evil curve, which I could never hit. If I’d ever by luck hit it, Leon would have probably found me later and whipped my butt. He was a fierce competitor. Thankfully, later we played on the same team and I never again had to face him on the mound with his famous high-kick gracefully delivered fastball. While I later served in the Marines for 43 years and 3 wars and 5 combat tours, Leon was always the epitome of a Warrior to me.
Leon had a presence about him that favored the little guy; he always stood up for the underdog; he never took advantage of the lesser skilled pugilist. In a fight, you always wanted Leon on your side. But Leon had a soft side, too. I remember when Leon brought his granddaughter to our Webster class breakfast. You could sense the love they shared, the affection and fondness they felt for one another, and how much the granddaughter loved and respected Leon. Yet, however much she may have doted on Leon, it paled in comparison to his love and pride in her. The measure of a man is often related to his relationship with his children and grandchildren and that relationship for Leon was immeasurable. It was so high, wide, and deep that it defied measurement. May God and Peace be with Leon. John Admire
