Erna Rock focused her life on raising her 5 children to be healthy and upstanding members of society.
She was tolerant of our faults while urging us to do better.
We learned how to make her laugh and we got joy out of seeing her periodic laughs.
We considered Mom the softer of the two parents, but she provided the correct balance to teach us about the value of persistence.
When we were young, Mom would send us outside to learn how to keep ourselves occupied. When we would arrive back to the house, hungry from our outdoor exertions, there would always be food available to us as we excitedly discussed our current adventures and schemes.
Mom allowed us to take risks and to learn from our mistakes. We learned through trial and error how to take calculated risks and to take personal responsibility for our actions.
Mom's German heritage provided her children a unique perspective of world culture, allowing us to feel comfortable in being exposed to new and different ideas.
We always felt comfortable in bringing our friends to our house as we knew Mom would both accept them and would feed them.
As we later learned the environment that Mom grew up in, with farming and World War 2, it helped us to better appreciate how wonderful our environment was.
Thank you Mom for providing us the proper upbringing necessary to provide a positive contribution to civilization.
