George H. Petty's Obituary
George Howard Petty has gone home to be with his Lord and Savior. George, 87, of Tulsa, Oklahoma passed away on October 23, 2020 at Clarehouse. He was born on September 22, 1933 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to Virgil Petty and Beatrice (Cox) Petty. He is survived by his two daughters, Rebecca Gibson and Deborah Straughan (Jimmy); three grandchildren, Rachel Rogers (Bruce), Ashley Brim (Jeremy), Bryan Gibson (Caitlin); seven great grandchildren, Tim, Lane, Ryan, Adison, Braxton, Britton and Forrest; two sisters, Phyllis Stith and Peggy Bullington, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Nancy Petty; his parents, Virgil and Beatrice Petty; and his son-in-law Robert Gibson.
George was so talented at many things. At the age of 13, he was the checker champion for the state of Oklahoma. Later, he was a member of the Martin Denver Industrial champion chess team. Over the years, George was also mentor to other young people in teaching them to play chess, not only to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but giving his time at the YMCA to teach kids in the Junior Achievement organization.
George was always ready to stand up for his beliefs and challenge status quo. He was a principled man, and loyalty and integrity were the foundation of his relationships, with family and friends.
George was the ultimate Boomer Sooner fan and loved to tell stories about all of the OU games over the decades. He passionately followed his team. He also loved German Shepherds and owned many throughout his life. But his last dog, Louie, was a little Bichon Frise. Although he treated his shepherds like lap dogs, in the end, he truly did have a lap dog.
George loved globetrotting with Nancy, particularly to Paris. He was an avid reader of history, chess books, biographies…but he especially enjoyed reading the bible and books by numerous theologians. If you knew George, he had probably given you a bible. He wanted to share that life changing book with as many people as possible. He is now in heaven with His Lord and joining his wife Nancy in praising God.
