Grady Davis Bates' Obituary
Grady Davis Bates
1992-2026
Grady Davis Bates entered this world on July 10, 1992, at St. Johns Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, bringing joy to his parents, David Wesley Bates and Kathryn Sue Redding. From the very start, Grady’s arrival marked the beginning of a life filled with adventure, laughter, and love—a legacy that would touch all those fortunate enough to know him.
He left this world prematurely on April 20, 2026.
Grady was an active, gregarious and intelligent child. When he was three years old, his mother married Jerry Gammill, and the family relocated to Bixby, Oklahoma, where Grady began attending school. Throughout his school years, Grady was involved in several sports, including baseball, wrestling, and rugby. At most games, all three of his parents could be found on the sidelines, cheering him on together, showing their support and pride. Grady was known to be a rather spicy team motivator and aggressive competitor. It was obvious at this point in Grady’s life that whatever he did it would be with his whole heart.
Between his Junior and senior years Grady’s road took a darker turn, and he developed a reputation for being a bit of a trouble maker, this resulted in an ultimatum that would ultimately change the direction of his life.
After graduation, Grady enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a Boatswain’s Mate aboard the USS Harpers Ferry. With his loud voice and aggressive personality Grady fit right into Navy life. During his time in the Navy, Grady developed a strong sense of camaraderie, finding a genuine brotherhood among his fellow sailors. This experience also ignited a lifelong passion for the ocean and boats.
After returning home, Grady explored a range of jobs and pursued some secondary education, searching for the brotherhood and discipline he had lost. Ultimately, he discovered that his greatest happiness came from being on the water. Driven by this passion, Grady earned his Captain’s license and went on to establish Unsalted Waters Chartering on Grand Lake of the Cherokees. Eager to further his expertise, he continued his education and achieved both 100-ton and 200-ton Merchant Mariner credentials, solidifying his commitment to a life spent sharing his love for the water.
Grady was known for his bigger than life demeanor, loud voice, sharp intellect and quick wit. He possessed a wicked sense of humor and a sailor’s vocabulary. He could light up a room, sometimes in more ways than one. His ability to make others smile was one of his most endearing qualities.
Beneath his playful spirit and humor lay a man with an exceptionally big heart. Grady was generous with his time and affection, always ready to help those he cared about. His loyalty and compassion for the people he cared for was unwavering.
Above all, Grady was a devoted father to his daughter, Lilah, who was born on October 29th, 2015. She truly was the center of his world, and Grady took immense pride in being her dad. His love for Lilah was apparent from the very first moment he saw her and continued to grow stronger with every passing day.
Grady is survived by his daughter Lilah Bates; his mother Kathryn “Suzy” Gammill and stepfather Jerry Gammill; his sister Grace Gammill and her fiancé Jared Griffith; as well as a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father David Bates and grandparents John and Betty Redding, and Bob and Wanda Bates.
Grady will be remembered for his resilience, laughter, kindness, and unwavering love of his family. His vibrant spirit and generous heart touched all who knew him. Though his absence leaves a profound void, the joy and love he brought to everyone will be treasured, living on in the memories and hearts of those who loved him.
Services will take place at the Rose Chapel at Floral Haven on Friday, May 1st, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
