Harley was the kindest, funniest, and most empathetic man I have ever met. He was a volunteer at the Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute and brightened every Friday that I was there for chemo (November 2018-April 2019). He made sure no one was alone in their journey and always had a funny story, quick grin, or sympathetic ear. It was only after I had gone through two months of treatments that Harley shared the story of his beloved wife's cancer. I felt honored that he did so. It just made his volunteerism at a chemo infusion center all that more extraordinary.
Because of the drugs I was given, I often fell asleep after about an hour and dozed for the remainder of my treatment. My mother was always with me, and I would be vaguely aware that Harley would come back on his rounds and chat with her to keep her spirits up. I just can't emphasize enough his kindness and concern for others!
I learned from a mutual friend that Harley had passed, and both my mother and I were tremendously saddened to hear that. But I also know that Harley had a faith as deep as the Grand Canyon and still loved and missed his wife. It makes me smile to think of them together again. May God bless and comfort your family and friends, Harley!
