I had the pleasure of living next door to Wayne for the past 15 years. I was a single mom, and he became a wonderful male role model for my two boys. They loved him so much, and I know he loved them too. My youngest son, Mason, would watch and wait to see Wayne's car pull up in his driveway so he could run over and help Wayne unload whatever bags he had from the store. Wayne would invite them over to create all kinds of fun things in his wood shop. They would come home with a car or a special item he had created with them. And when Christmas rolled around, he always surprised my boys with some handmade special item that they will cherish for all of their days. I can remember one time when my boys had thrown a ball onto our roof and it had gotten stuck. Wayne brought over his ladder and held it for me while I climbed up on the roof. He wanted to make sure the boys got their ball back. He was always so helpful and caring. We will miss him dearly.
Wayne became my "other Dad" when I met him 35 years ago. A quiet, gentle giant, always available to listen, offer advice when he thought he should, and never failed to encourage action reflecting a Christian walk. I peered into the sanctuary at Sheridan Avenue UMC today and looked up. I was instantly reminded of helping with the remodel many years ago. Wayne, and Claude Shepard, led us in that endeavor. I remember climbing to the top of scaffolding some 30 feet in the air to wipe down the rafters with linseed oil. We would reach what we could, then Wayne and others would roll that scaffolding to a new area while we swayed back and forth singing Nearer My God to Thee. Although I have not been in touch with Wayne and Beverly recently, I remember them both quite often, and still consider them Mom and Dad. It is an honor to be asked to sing at the service for Wayne, and I do so with love for them both.David Hays
Wayne's giving nature and unselfish ways were a blessing to everyone who knew him. Our thoughts are filled with many memories of Wayne. With deepest sympathy from our hearts may angels walk with you until we met again.Bob and Deanna Phillipe
