Irene, or mom as I like to call her, was a beautiful woman and has a beautiful soul. She welcomed me into the family from the very beginning and I felt loved by her even then. I have so many memories that are special to me that we have made over the years but her sharing her passion of quilting when I expressed a small interest in learning to sew is one that I can continue to keep her memory alive. I would call her with silly questions that I already had asked her a million times but she never made me feel stupid for asking again. She would always take the time to talk to me about different projects she was working on and I would always “oh” and “awe” over them. One time we were at the fabric store and I commented on a beautiful Christmas quilt hanging up on display in the store. It had a the classic red truck on it. I love red trucks and she knew it. Little did I know she had made that quilt for me. I was gifted it shortly after that for Christmas.
My quilts will likely never be as beautiful as hers but I will spend my life honoring her passion for her family that she showed through her incredibly talented skills in quilting. Everyone loves wrapping up in a cozy quilt. If you’ve ever made one you realize the incredible labor of love it is to create one for someone you care for. “The more you wash them the softer they become. My quilts are meant to be used and enjoyed.” ~ Irene “mom” Hulsey. We love you!
