I am the daughter of Jane’s cousin, Linda Bower Dean, whose father Lawrence was Jane’s father’s brother. I just got off the phone with my mom, and we were talking about Jane. My mom said that when she’s heard that Jane had received a terminal cancer diagnosis, she called Jane up and was surprised and delighted to find her in such good spirits. She said Jane sounded like it was her birthday, so happy and joyful. Jane said she was not at all worried or in pain.
Still, the loss is all of ours. Jane was our family record keeper. My mom said that each time they talked, Jane would ask about each family member, noting how each of the kids were doing, where they lived, what was new, keeping track of the changes and continuities in each of our lives. What will we do without her?
We know so many others are feeling the same way. I hope it’s a consolation for the rest of her family and friends to be in touch in this way. I know it is for us.
