Jessie Barton Torbert's Obituary
Jessie Barton Torbert, 89 Died on Monday October 17, 2011 in Tulsa, OK. She was born on September 26, 1922 in Shawnee, OK to Jesse and Elizabeth Barton. Jessie graduated from Oklahoma A & M with a Master’s degree in Business Education. She married Jake Torbert on June 3, 1951 in Tonkawa, OK. They were married 38 years. Before her marriage, she taught at the high school at Cleveland, OK and at Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa, OK. While at Northern Oklahoma Junior College, besides teaching business classes she was the coach of the women’s basketball team. After raising her children, she returned to teaching and retired from Memorial High School Tulsa, OK. where she taught business and typing classes. She was a member of the Kirk of the Hills PresbyterianChurch, Tulsa, OK. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lee Torbert, of Tulsa, OK. and by her son Barton J. Torbert and his wife, Jean, of Golden, CO. She is remembered by her family and friends as intelligent, kind, cheerful, energetic, and inquisitive-and at 89 years of age “she was in the middle of living life.” Donations in her memory may be made to the Little Lighthouse (www.littlelighthouse.org). Graveside service will be held Thursday, October 20, 2011, 10:00 a.m. at Floral Haven Cemetery.
