My family was blessed to have the Nieto family as our neighbors-the kind that end up being family. Betty and Jose became some of my parents' best friends and I'm sure all of us, then kids, have childhood memories of going between our houses. I guess that means I have 40+ years of memories to cherish.
Jose was an example of how to live life. He was wise, tender-hearted, and always tuned in to others' needs. He was also hysterical. He could make the most ordinary of get-togethers special. Being around someone that many years, you can't help but have had them impact your life. I've learned many important things from Jose, but I'll also enjoy the smaller morsels he's given me. I enjoyed cooking, so when they would come to our house, he was always interested in what I was making and how I did it. He had all that knowledge from the food industry. He taught me the secret to making a good soup. The secret-- a long, slow cooked bone broth for the foundation. And that was back in the eighties, long before bone broth became the trend it is now. I also remember silly things, like he and I messing with my parents by talking about the Young and Restless characters as if they were real, since they didn't watch it. Lots of little moments-all special. I guess the biggest thing I can learn from him is to try to live life the way he did-with a playful heart combined with compassion. I'll miss his big voice and his big heart!
