Michael Toney's Obituary
Michael N. Toney, 72, passed away on May 12, 2017 at home surrounded by his family. Mike was born on December 8, 1944 in Pryor, OK to H.E. and Jessie (Hudson) Toney. He graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1963. He married Joyce Marie Syverson on May 14, 1965. He continued his education and played football at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. After graduation, he moved to Tulsa and began working for Pan American (Amoco). Mike and Joyce opened Toney’s Restaurant in 1973 while he continued to work at Amoco. They closed Toney’s in 1982, and after 27 years of service at Amoco, he retired in 1995. He started coaching girls softball in Tulsa 1975 and was an active volunteer coach and officer for Tulsa Girls Softball Federation for many years. He also coached girls basketball. He received many awards and honors for coaching, including TGSF Coach of the Year in 1985, Metro Tulsa Hall of Honor Coach in 1990, and he was inducted into the Oklahoma ASA Hall of Fame and also received a Meritorious Service Award in 2010. Mike and Joyce were longtime residents of Tulsa, OK. In 2000, they moved to Broken Arrow and became members of Indian Springs Country Club. Mike was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, uncle, coach, and friend. Besides coaching, he loved playing golf, fishing, working crossword puzzles, and doing aerobics. He also loved ice cream, chocolate shakes, peppermints, and Joyce’s no-bake cookies. He was an avid OU sports fan. His parents H.E. and Jessie Toney, his brothers, Pat Toney and Jeff Toney, his son-in-law, Joey Crawford, precede Mike in death. He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, Joyce; daughters, Michelle Crawford and husband, Keith of Verdigris, OK; Maria Jones of Norman, OK; Mikki Crawford of Tulsa, OK; eight grandchildren, Joey and his wife Celina, Megan, Tyler, Haydn, Ethan, Macy, Elizabeth, and Zion; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. Family visitation will be Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Floral Haven (6500 S. 129th East Avenue, Broken Arrow, OK 74012). The celebration of life will be Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Floral Haven with Buddy Plummer and Jim Most officiating.
