1988 - Novale and I were tasked to run an 11C school at Ft. Hood. We decided to ride share and split the fuel costs. I was an avid biker and him a cop. On the road trip we developed an instant dislike for each other. We kind of mellowed out and focused on the task at hand. During the first morning briefing with the students; Novale gets up in front of the class and talks about his military and police career. Taking bad guys off the streets speech. I went up to introduce myself and told the class, "I'm a Harley Rider and I hate cops." they fell out laughing.
Not to be outdone, Novale steps up and explains to the class how he "recruited" me for the Reserves; "I was out on patrol and I see this Harley rider run through a stop sign and pulled him over for rolling thru a stop sign. This biker starts arguing with me about how he slowed down and I told him the sign says, "Stop." The biker keeps arguing with me about how he slowed down and starts squaring off with me, so I wnet bakc to the patrol car and got my billy club and started beating the crap out of this biker and I'm asking him, "Now, do you want me to slow down or stop?"
After the biker relented, Novale asked him, what do you do for a living. I'm in the Army the Biker replies and I teach weapons. Novale tells the students, "I made him a deal. You transfer to the reserves and come teach for me and I won't take you to jail and that's how you have a biker Instructor.
Ever since that day until his death - it was game on of mutual respect and rivalry. I miss that man.
