Orval Louis Meyer's Obituary
Orval Louis William Herbert Meyer entered this world on July 27, 1925. He was born in a farmhouse just outside of Sumner, Iowa. His parents were Henry and Marie (Boderman) Meyer. He had two brothers (Wilbert and Marvin) and one sister (LaVera). On the farm, he learned the values of hard work and seeing a task through to completion. He was president of his senior class of 48 and he played the lead role in the school musical his senior year.Orval entered the U.S. Navy on January 19, 1946 and was stationed in Washington, DC. He was sent to communications school where he was trained by IBM to work with computers. He was discharged on November 21, 1947 and made his residence in Waterloo, Iowa.Orval found employment as a clerk at Sholl’s Food Shop where he met Viola Windolf. Viola asked Orval out for their first date – a dance – and soon they were dancing 3 to 4 nights a week. Viola and Orval were married in Waterloo on November 5, 1948 and raised a family consisting of four children: Carol, Nancy, Roger, and Larry.In September 1948, Orval became employed by Mid-Continent Petroleum as a data machine operator. In 1968, Orval and his family were transferred to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Many promotions and several mergers later, Orval was promoted to Manager of Accounting & Data Processing and he retired from Sunoco in 1983.Orval placed God first in his life and family second. He loved playing cards, traveling (he visited all 50 states), spending time with family and friends, and volunteering at his church. He served for 6 years as church treasurer at Bethany Lutheran and served a few years as computer consultant to Bethany Lutheran and the AR-OK Synod of the ELCA.At the end of his life, Orval struggled with Alzheimer’s. His loving wife of 69 years, Viola, left this world on July 2, 2018. Orval followed her on August 4, 2018; he was 93 years young.Orval was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; his parents; a brother and a sister; daughter, Carol Oakes; and grandson, Michael Meyer. He is survived by daughter, Nancy Davis and her husband Al; sons Roger Meyer and his wife Shelley, and Larry Meyer and his wife Libby; son-in-law, Dick Oakes; brother, Marvin; 6 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Joy Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund.Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Floral Haven, Broken Arrow.The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at Joy Lutheran Church, Tulsa.
