My mom was the strongest woman I know. Family was everything. She was a single mother who worked hard to raise 3 kids, making sacrifices herself to make sure they had what they needed. She adored all her grandchildren and her greatest sorrow was not living close enough to them to be able to spend more time with them. Life was never easy for her. Yet she was tender hearted, gentle, quiet, kind, forgiving, generous. People and even animals were drawn to her. She was well loved. I was blessed to have her spend her final years in our home. I have so many wonderful memories. I’m going to miss her. She would want you to realize- loved ones are the important “stuff” of life. Make time for them.
Mom’s parent’s lives spanned the transition between Indian Territory and what we now know as Oklahoma. Grandpa Jess’s birth certificate states his place of birth as Indian Territory. Grandma Betsy’s states Oklahoma. Her grand parents endured the Trail of Tears in the 1830’s. Her mother told us kids that we were direct descendants of Tecumseh, and so did mom. She was proud of her Indian heritage, in spite of the fact that the white man tried to beat the Indian out of the children at Chilocco; and she influenced us to be proud of our heritage, and hold our heads high. She told us, “never let a man tell you that you’ll never amount to anything. You can be and do anything you desire!” (More to Follow)
