Sam Muskrat's Obituary
Sam was born in Grove, Oklahoma and was raised in Pineville, Missouri and later moved to Aurora, Missouri. After graduation from Aurora High School, he relocated to Tulsa, where he worked nights at the Post Office while attending Tulsa University. He was a member of the Army National Guard at the time of the Berlin Crisis. He and his wife Gladys have been happily married since 1958.
He is survived by his wife Gladys; their daughter Kathy Muskrat and grandson Sebastian Muskrat; their son Keith Muskrat and his wife Susanna and granddaughters Charlotte Smith and her husband Jarid with great grandchildren Evelyn and Westley; Julianna McConegly and her husband Matthew; and Madeline Muskrat. He is also survived by his siblings, Jim Muskrat, Tom Muskrat, Mary Smith, and Ida Dunham; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Joe and Jake Muskrat.
After graduation from Tulsa University, Sam started his own business in 1963 in Broken Arrow, just before B.A.’s boom, specializing in tax and bookkeeping services for individuals and small businesses. He later formed a partnership with LeRoy Duncan, resulting in the establishment of Muskrat & Duncan, C.P.A.’s, one of the oldest independent CPA firms in Broken Arrow.
Sam was a very active leader in the Broken Arrow and Tulsa Communities. He was on the boards of the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce, Broken Arrow Education Foundation, Broken Arrow Neighbors, Franciscan Villa Nursing Home, Broken Arrow Economic Development Authority, and the Catholic Foundation of Eastern Oklahoma. He was Board Chairman of MedPac, Inc., St. Johns Hospital, Chairman of the Finance Committee at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Broken Arrow, Treasurer of the Broken Arrow Knights of Columbus, member of the Citizens Oversight Committee (Tulsa County’s Jail Tax Watch Dog), and past president of the Broken Arrow Civitans. When he had any free time, he enjoyed reading, genealogy (connecting with his Cherokee Heritage), and dancing with his beloved wife Gladys.
Sam always seemed to find time to help out with a new project when asked and he was a prime example of what type of people make up a great community.
