Shera and I met in the fall of 1985, our first semester at Oral Roberts University. We immediately hit it off with each other and our friend Kelley...we were a tripod!
Shera had a zest for visiting people and traveling. We would drive to Denver, where Kelley was from, and we would explore Colorado... Shera, Kelley and I, and several ORU friends went skiing in Winter Park on a school vacation, where Shera and I tried skiing for the first time! I remember visiting her in California on a summer vacation...we drove up and down Big Sur highway, we camped out in a redwood forest, we explored San Francisco and ate seafood. I remember her bright red truck...I can’t imagine the miles she put on that vehicle, driving it all over the United States! We visited friends from Arkansas, Texas...she was alway ready to go anywhere!
Shera was funny, she was smart, she was hardworking...but she also loved to blow off studying to go eat nachos with me...we ate a lot of nachos! I also remember getting bagels after church at a little Jewish bakery...the owners, a lovely older couple, were always so happy to see Shera on Sunday mornings. What can I say? We were hungry college students! And we talked...and talked...and talked. We shared those intense conversations that occur while one is at college...I’m forever grateful for those memories.
Shera had an unshakable faith in Jesus. At ORU I remember we we would all go to vespers services every week...Shera would lose herself in the worship music. Our friend Amy could play the guitar (as could Shera a bit), and we would all be singing and worshipping together in the hallway of our dorm. We shared so many conversations about faith...I never saw her faith waver in spite of all the challenges she faced in her life.
Kelley and I had the opportunity to visit Shera this past July and spend time with Bob, Josh, Rachel and Ben. The most important thing to Shera on our visit was for us to spend time getting to know her kids and her husband. She loved her family so much! And I loved Shera. I will miss her enthusiasm for living, I will miss seeing her faith in Jesus, and I will miss seeing her love for her family. Shera, you lived your life well...until we meet again, my friend!
