Susan V. Salter's Obituary
Susan Vandegrift Durrett Salter was born in Richmond Virginia August 13, 1924 in a log cabin, on the family compound called Lone Moose. She graduated from Longwood College in Virginia with a degree in Literature. While in college she met a distinguished and dashing soldier Lawrence John Cash Salter. They married on 12/23/1944. Sue was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, various women’s clubs and worked at the local historical societies. Sue loved playing bridge, solitaire, doing crossword puzzles and reading her newspaper every morning with her coffee. Sue believed in protecting all wildlife but dogs were her soft spot. She supported many organizations over the years with the World Wildlife Society, Animal Shelter in St. Croix and the St. Croix Botanical Society being at the top of her list. Sue had a very big heart and generous giving spirit. In her later years it was discovered that she had been giving the paper carrier $200 monthly tips at which point it was decided she was being a little too generous. Sue’s first adventure was leaving the safety of warm Virginia and family for cold winters in Michigan. She taught preschool but had a head for figures and began working in the office at Bloomfield Hills Country Club. In June of 1972 Sue and Larry took a huge leap in pursuit of their dreams by moving to St. Croix where they opened Tradewinds Liquor with their long time friends Bob & Camilla Adams. They had a plan for a luxurious life with Larry playing golf, learning to play the organ and cooking good fish for Sue. Needless to say none of those endeavors came about because they both lived by a philosophy work hard, give more and enjoy the journey! Tradewinds Liquor came first and the work was never done. They loved the Caribbean life so much they spent every waking moment promoting the business and entertaining friends and family. Sue was loved by everyone she met with her bright friendly smile and a twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. Sue lived a bold, beautiful and adventurous life with a strong faith and belief that life is what you make it. Her zest for life allowed her a freedom to not fear the unknown; she firmly believed everything was in God’s time. Her love for travel took her many places the furthest being China which she loved immensely. Sue is survived by her son John wife Martha their children James, wife Holly (son Kyler), Luke Lily and the youngest Ella. Sue’s daughter Denise and partner Donna and their children April (children Delilah, Thomas and Cadence), Kristin husband Clay (Children Jordan, Houston, Caylee, Cash and Kali) and Brittany (Children Kaleb, Khloe and Kyrie), God children Barbara Lynn, Jonathan and Larry James and many loved nieces and nephews.Private Family Services to be held at later date.
