We shared many memories with Vern and Peggy and their family at Abell's Wharf. There was no other place like Abell's Wharf.
The Lord has a beautiful angel now. RIP Vern!
I worked for Peg and Vern when they operated the Abells Wharf Restraunt . Vern had such a peronality and outgoing warmth about him ,and also Peggy. We would sit many nights by the fireplace drinking margaritas and talking about the difference in farm life and city life .His sons Bill and Mike were so nice to all of us who worked there. I have often thought of the Miles family as the years have passed. Each year the Christmas ornaments that they gave me have been placed on my tree. My prayers go to the family and may Vernon RIP With Love- Mary Jane (Ridgell) Bowles
Although it's been many years since I have seen Peg and Vern and son Billy I think of them as Billy and I were friends and vern and peg were friends of my mothers here in Maryland. The family were all champion waterskiers and were very active in the founding of the St. Mary's water ski club at Abells wharf. My sympathy and prayers go out to Billy and the family Johnny Cook
I could talk about what a strong and self-sufficient person Vernon was. But you all know that. But I'd like to just share about what a compassionate person he was; how many people with no place to go, that Vernon took in, and made them a part of his own family. He was also a great father. BIll and Michael were truly blessed to have this man to raise them. But even more than that, he was a father to those who needed one. My father died when I was very young. Vernon was his friend. In the past few years, I've had the chance to sit down with Vern and learn more about my own father, and in the process felt that Vern, even at my age, was being a father to me, as he had so many others. I will sorely miss him, and the opportunity to have just sat down with him one more time and shared a drink and a c

Vernon loved fishing so he and Bill and I got the boat hooked up, bait, rods and snacks ready and were all excited to go but when we came over the hill, the flag was whipping at hurricane-like force. We were grounded and of course he and Bill insisted it was my fault. Another year, Bill called me in a panic. He and his dad had been out fishing for several hours and probably gone 40 miles without so much as a bite. Could I help? I rushed down and we went out but we still didn't catch anything. I wish I could have gotten to know him better but I'm glad I knew him at all He will be sorely missed My condolences to the Miles family in their time of grief. Michael Reid
Vern always showed compassion, empathy, respect and generosity. He was a great example to a group of boys who looked up to him as a role model that we wanted to emulate. He made each of us feel valued, gave much, expecting nothing in return. He will be missed by those that knew him until we join him.
