When I think about my Aunt Sissy, I can’t help but also think of Uncle Tom. I always knew in my heart that their relationship was the most important thing to them. I always knew they made their family their first and top priority. Not that they ever said that to me, I just knew by being around them, it was so obvious. Their family was such a great example to me. Another thing that comes to mind is how Aunt Sissy and Uncle Tom always expressed how important education was going to be for David and Julie. They were right. I remember how focused and intentionally directed their family always seemed to me. As a child, I always enjoyed spending time with the entire Goree family.
As a young girl I thought my Aunt was such a fashionista. Aunt Sissy always had on a cute outfit. I wanted to look like her always! I never did, but always wanted to have that pulled together look that she always had. Aunt Sissy was always laughing about something. She always had a funny joke or story to tell. She welcomed us in her home frequently, cooked for us on so many holidays, we played so many board games and card games together.
I remember fondly the 50th surprise birthday party David and Julie pulled off for their Mom. There were so many people that made time in their busy schedules to travel in and celebrate Aunt Sissy. I remember thinking then that said so much about how important Aunt Sissy was to so many people. I think that comes to mind now as so many of us can not come in and be part of Aunt Sissy’s memorial service. I feel lucky that I have so many happy memories of Aunt Sissy.
To David and Julie, your Mom was loved by many. We wish we could be there for you. All our love, Kim and Jim.
