Avenue of Flags

Memorial Day Weekend

A Lasting Tribute to Honor Our Veterans

For over five decades, Floral Haven Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens has proudly presented the Avenue of Flags, a powerful Memorial Day tradition that honors the lives and legacies of the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Each year, the cemetery is transformed with more than 4,400 casket flags donated by families of veterans, creating a striking and heartfelt display of remembrance across our grounds.

What the Avenue of Flags Represents

The Avenue of Flags is more than a visual tribute, it’s a living expression of gratitude, remembrance, and community. The program includes:

Flag Placement at Veterans’ Graves: Volunteers from American Legion Post #308 place small flags at veterans’ grave sites throughout the cemetery in the days leading up to Memorial Day.

Raising of the Avenue of Flags: More than 4,400 veteran-donated casket flags are raised by JROTC cadets, family members, and Floral Haven staff, lining the cemetery in a breathtaking display of honor.

First-Time Honorees: Families who have donated a flag in the past year take part in its ceremonial first raising, assisted by JROTC cadets during the weekend observance.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Reenactment: Youth On Guard perform the “Changing of the Guard” ceremony at our replica Tomb of the Unknowns—every half hour by day and every hour by night throughout the weekend.

Honor Roll Readings: The names of all veterans interred at Floral Haven over the past year are read aloud at scheduled times from the Veterans Field Carillon Tower.

Freedom Boxes for Troops: In partnership with the Broken Arrow Blue Star Mothers, comfort items are collected to send to active-duty service members deployed overseas.

National Moment of Remembrance: At 3:00 PM on Memorial Day, visitors pause for one minute of silence in unity with communities across the nation.

Retiring of the Colors: The Indian Nations Council of the Boy Scouts of America ceremonially retires the flags, including the Garrison Flag, bringing the Avenue of Flags to a respectful close for the year.

Honor guards march in formation at a memorial, paying tribute with rifles held high.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Reenactment

As part of the Avenue of Flags tradition, visitors can witness a moving reenactment of the Changing of the Guard at Floral Haven’s replica of the Tomb of the Unknowns. Performed by specially trained cadets, the ceremony honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice—every half hour during the day and every hour at night throughout Memorial Day weekend.
