O.L. Acker was born March 27, 1936 to Pervin and Myra Dobbs Acker in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. He attended school in Sallisaw until the age of 13, when he moved to Stillwater to live with his sister Dorothy and her husband, Charles Lowery. He completed High School in Stillwater and attended Oklahoma State University. He later moved to Tulsa, working for Tuoma Pipe. At age 22 he joined the Army and following his training was stationed in Germany for 18 months. Returning home he went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone and was recalled to active duty, this time spending 11 months at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. He returned home again and resumed his employment with Southwestern Bell, spending the next 36 years with them. He retired following renal failure due to polycystic kidney disease, and was on dialysis for 14 years. He was active in Boy Scouts, serving as Assistant Scoutmaster and then Scoutmaster for Troop 66. During his work with Boy Scouts, he was awarded the Silver Beaver. He remained in scouting until he suffered renal failure. His time with the scouts as a youth and as a Scoutmaster covered over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Richard, Bob and Harold Acker and one sister, Dorothy Acker Lowery. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Johnson Acker, children Robert Michael Acker and Janet Diane Irwin, three granddaughters, Alexis Linville, Chelsea Irwin and Meghan Irwin, half-sisters Zelma Acker Glass and Velma Acker Rider, as well as a myriad of nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Visitation will be from 12:00-9:00 PM Thursday, October 14th with family to greet from 6:00-8:00 PM at Floral Haven Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, October 15, 2010 at Floral Haven Chapel.
